One ingredient: 100% brewer's yeast. It's the yeast strain Saccharomyces cerevisiae, dried and milled to a fine powder, and it's one of the oldest and most straightforward supplements in the cupboard.
What it's mostly used for. Skin and coat. Brewer's yeast is a good source of B vitamins, and Dougie's list it as promoting healthy skin, hair, eyes, liver function and immune function. It's a proper spread of nutrients rather than a single one: B vitamins, plus selenium, potassium, chromium, iron, zinc and magnesium, along with antioxidants. Dougie's also say it's known to reduce anxiety in some dogs.
The bit people don't expect. Dogs love it. Dougie's describe it as a highly palatable powder, and that's not marketing, it's the reason brewer's yeast has been used as a food topper for decades. If you've a dog who picks at their dinner, or one coming off an illness whose appetite hasn't come back, a sprinkle of this over the bowl is a very old trick and a good one. Two reasons to buy it, one pot.
It runs at 43% crude protein, which is high for a powdered supplement, with crude fat at 3%, crude ash at 7% and almost no fibre at under 1%.
The amounts are small. A quarter of a teaspoon for a little dog, up to a teaspoon for anything over 16kg, so a 200g pot goes on for months rather than weeks.
It's made in the UK, by a North Yorkshire producer, with the feed establishment approval number printed on the pot.
Why We Love It
- One ingredient. 100% brewer's yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, nothing else
- A natural source of B vitamins, plus selenium, potassium, chromium, iron, zinc and magnesium
- Promotes healthy skin, hair, eyes, liver function and immune function
- Highly palatable, so it doubles as a topper for a fussy eater or a dog off their food
- Known to reduce anxiety in some dogs
- 43% crude protein, printed on the pot
- Small daily amounts, so a 200g pot lasts a long time
- Made in the UK, in North Yorkshire
How much to give
The feeding guide for adult dogs, as printed on the pot:
| Your dog | Per day |
|---|---|
| 2 to 5kg | ¼ teaspoon |
| 6 to 15kg | ½ teaspoon |
| 16kg and over | 1 teaspoon |
Sprinkle it over food and stir it through. It mixes into wet, raw and dry alike, and most dogs are pleased to see it.
Introduce it gradually, as with anything new, and give it a few weeks before you judge what it's doing for the coat. Skin and coat are slow to change because hair grows slowly, so this is a supplement you keep going with rather than one you assess after a week.
Store it somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.
